(Smaug's Death)

Falešné společenstvo Composed 2013 Recorded 2014

Historical background of the song

A key moment in the tale of Bilbo, which could not be left out of the Hobit performance. It talks about the death of Smaug the dragon by the archer Bard, with a little help of an eager informer the thrush.

Fictive author

Probably one of the Esgaroth survivors, right after he’s taken a good long bath and managed to reach the shore.

Origin and development of the song

I wrote this song on spring 2013 for the Hobbit performance, and it was introduced on Tolkiencon 2014, and repeated on Festival Fantazie 2014 in Chotěboř. It’s also on our second CD Hobit, recorded in September 2014.

It arose from a sentence which came to me when reading the Hobit „Co mu cvrlikají ptáci na římse / Bard poslouchá a diví se.“ („What are the birds on the ledge chirping, Bard is listening and wondering.“) I think the subtle swing rhythm of the song arouse of the words „diví se“ („wondering“). I remember the song almost composing itself, more as if I was writing something that someone has composed before (which I can’t rule out). The cheerful refrain rather reminds of fans on a football stadium – the people of Esgarosth on the shore, excluded from the match itself, are at least cheering on those who are left on the court. At the time of the last kick – the strike of an arrow into the dragon’s vulnerable spot -  they shout and hug each other and demolish the stadium (in this case the recording studio – our sound engineer wasn’t pleased by the yelling at all.)
